What this checklist doesn't cover
This is for the person who has to approve a commercial playground or outdoor gym installation—maybe a school, a parks department, or a community center. You don't need another catalogue pitch. You need a checklist.
I'm a quality compliance manager at a commercial playground equipment company. I review site plans and finished installations before they reach customers—roughly 200 packages a year for the last 4 years. In Q1 2024, I rejected 14% of first-round site packages because of clearance or surfacing errors. Not because the equipment was bad, but because a detail was wrong. This checklist is what I actually use.
A good brand is like a bowling ball bag: the label gets you to look, but the handle and stitching are what fail under load. But on-site, that lat pulldown station may need 3–4 feet of clear space behind and above the user. A spinner or carousel needs free space for people to step off.
Another thing people miss: overhead clearance. A pull-up bar or a tall climber needs headroom above it, not just lateral space. I've had to reject a layout because a roof overhang made the highest bar unusable. The fix was simple—move the unit two feet—but it required redoing the foundation plan.
Don't get hypnotized by a product render. The animation can make every movement as smooth as a slide guitar riff, but none of them show the 6-foot clearance zone behind the bench. Draw that zone on the actual ground, not just on the plan.

- Anchors: Are the bolts the correct galvanized or stainless grade for your soil?
- Color: If brand color matters, specify a Pantone code and a Delta E tolerance of under 2. A powder-coated part that drifts in color may also signal a curing problem.
In Q1 2024, we received a batch of 40 anchor bolts where the zinc plating was visibly off—it had a powdery white deposit against our spec. Normal tolerance is zero for powdery corrosion on new parts. The vendor claimed it was 'within industry standard.' We rejected the batch, and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes that requirement in writing.
5. Confirm signage and claims before you publish anything
If you're applying for a grant or advertising the new playground, watch how you word environmental and safety claims. Per FTC guidelines, 'recyclable' or 'recycled content' claims must be substantiated. Keep the product data sheet in your file. If the city wants to post 'Made with recycled materials,' make sure the percentage is accurate.
Same for maintenance claims. If a vendor says 'no maintenance,' get it in writing. I've seen a verbal promise disappear by the time the first loose bolt appeared.
6. Do a punch-list walkthrough before final payment
This is the step most people ignore. They trust the installer's final invoice and the brand name. I don't.
Walk around after the installation is complete, preferably after a day or two of use. Check that moving parts rotate without scraping, bolts haven't loosened, and surface material hasn't washed away underneath. (Note to self: always take a torque wrench sample on the first two panels—it only takes ten minutes.)
If the supplier promised a plastic part and replaced it with a metal one without approval, document it. One of my biggest regrets: not documenting a vendor's verbal promise about replacement parts. If I'd gotten it in writing, we'd have had grounds for a discount.
What this checklist doesn't cover
It doesn't replace your local building code, accessibility standards, or a structural engineer's review. It also doesn't mean small orders deserve less attention. If a supplier treats a two-station order like a nuisance, that's an early warning. The vendors who treated my $2,000 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $200,000 projects.
